The Writer’s Perspective is offering one course for Summer 2026: the Advanced Writing Workshop. The Advanced Writing Workshop is application-only and capped at 12 students. More information below.
Advanced Writing Workshop
The Writer’s Perspective: Advanced Writing Workshop is an application-only, exclusive six-week program consisting of weekly seminars and weekly creative-writing workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, in addition to individualized feedback and mentorship from faculty, all with a 1:6 faculty-to-student ratio. Students will participate in a weekly 90-minute seminar focused on reading and analyzing contemporary literature, as well as a weekly 2-hour workshop devoted to rigorous discussion of student work in a traditional creative-writing workshop setting.
The program is designed to offer advanced high-school writers a highly personalized experience that develops their work toward a university or even professional level. The curriculum is unique from other high-school writing courses for its advanced level, individualized engagement, and focus on the most recent, innovative literature, including experimental and formally inventive works, in line with what is being read by working writers today. Authors taught will include recent Nobel Prize winners and literary pioneers such as Han Kang, Ben Lerner, Annie Ernaux, George Saunders, László Krasznahorkai, Jon Fosse, Louise Glück, Kim Hyesoon, Yoko Tawada, Samanta Schweblin, Solvej Balle, Kiese Laymon, Bhanu Kapil, and others (subject to change).
In the Advanced Workshop, students will receive individualized writing feedback, tailored reading assignments, and mentorship from actively publishing writers with university-level teaching experience. Students will not only submit their own writing for critique, but will also learn how to lead discussions, closely read their peers’ work, and offer thoughtful editorial feedback — skills that deepen their understanding of craft and strengthen them as both writers and editors. With a small student-to-faculty ratio, students will receive direct, live feedback from faculty members with extensive experience running university-level writing workshops, editing literary magazines, and judging literary contests. Students will come away from the course with a polished portfolio of writing suitable for submission to literary magazines, fellowships, college application arts supplements, as well as awards such as the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and YoungArts. Ideal applicants are students who excel in their English classes, actively pursue writing outside the classroom, and are eager to engage seriously with both contemporary literature and the workshop process. Enrollment for this course is by application only and capped at 12 students who are entering high-school 10th grade or above as of Fall 2026.
